Retail Store Closing Cleanout Checklist for Metro Atlanta Businesses

    Updated October 4, 2026 • 5 min read

Closing or moving a store comes with a hard deadline: the lease end date. This checklist walks through what to sell, what to keep, and what to have hauled so the space is empty and broom-swept before the final walkthrough.

4 weeks out: decide what leaves with you

Make a list of fixtures, equipment, and stock moving to a new location or storage. Everything not on that list will be sold, donated, or removed.

    • Check your lease for what the landlord expects removed (fixtures, signage, wall-mounted displays)
    • List saleable fixtures and shelving early; buyers need time to pick up
    • Arrange liquidation for remaining inventory if needed

2 weeks out: book the cleanout

Book the haul-away for a few days before the lease end, so there is a buffer if anything comes up. Share the property type, access (rear door, loading area, mall service corridor), and what is being removed.

Mall and shopping-center units often have service-hour rules and require a certificate of insurance. Ask property management in advance.

    What the crew can remove

Big Boys removes approved non-hazardous material from retail spaces, including:

    • Gondola shelving, slatwall, racks, and display cases
    • Counters, desks, chairs, and back-office furniture
    • Leftover stock, packaging, pallets, and cardboard
    • Electronics and point-of-sale hardware for e-waste recycling
    • Break-room appliances and storage room contents

    What to handle separately

Signage attached to the building exterior and any electrical or plumbing disconnects should be handled by your contractor before pickup day. If anything unusual is left behind, just point it out when you book and we'll tell you how we can handle it.

Pickup day and the final walkthrough

The crew loads everything you have approved, then sweeps the cleared areas. Walk the space with your photos from move-in, and take new photos for your records before returning the keys.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How is a store cleanout priced?

Most retail cleanouts are priced by trailer space, from $99 for 1/8 of a trailer to $649 for a full trailer, plus the $49 area service fee and any add-ons. Larger stores that need multiple loads are scoped before work begins.

Can you clear the store in one day?

Many small and mid-size units can be cleared in one visit. Large stores or warehouses may need multiple loads or scheduled days, which we confirm before removal.

    Do you donate leftover stock?

Usable items are donated or recycled when practical. Let us know if any stock must be destroyed rather than donated.
